| Where will Internship With Southern Hemisphere take you?
An Internship with Southern Hemisphere is an opportunity for students to fly as high as they can. With offices based in culturally rich areas, this internship combines the experience of professional and personal development.Due to the diversity of our work, staff and experiences, an Internship with Southern Hemisphere endeavours to encourage young people to: * Be a part of the transformation and development process in South Africa; * Be a part of developing closer relationships between the SADC, Africa and the Caribbean regions; * Make a real and tangible contribution to uplifting people’s lives in both regions; *Develop a better and practical understanding of what it means to be grappling with development in the developing world context; *Be involved in every facet of a small business that Southern Hemisphere engages in; * Be a part of a small but dynamic, committed, focused and fun loving team; *Integrate theory and practice, and develop ones practical skills; *Share in our natural beauty and culture as we are located in the middle of the most dynamic but beautiful sceneries in Cape Town we are located in the centre, one of the most beautiful cities in the world; and in Puerto Rico we are located in San Juan, a beautiful coastal fort town Minimum requirements: To qualify for an Internship with Southern Hemisphere, one must meet the following requirements: *Must at least have an Honour degrees, but preferably enrolled in a Masters Program at the time of application; *Must be innovative, organised and flexible *Must be able to work independently *Must have a research background, (subjects in qualitative and quantitative Research Methodology) Note: *International students are required to make arrangement for their visa application, however Southern Hemisphere provides support whenever needed. DURATION:The Southern Hemisphere Internship programme is offered on six-months period twice in a year, January –June, July - December. Interns are expected to work four days a week (9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) and interns are free to choose which days they would avail themselves for work. | Meet our Interns
Gail Smith - First intern ever! Gail Smith, was the very first intern at Southern Hemisphere and joined us straight after finishing her Honors in Sociology at the University of Cape Town. She liked her experience so much that she decided to stay with us for the next four years where she continued to work as our junior researcher until 2004 when she was awarded the Nelson Mandela Scholarship. She completed her Masters at the University of Sussex. She grew from being an intern here to now being one of our Associates! .Cheryl Schoenberg …our first international Intern Cheryl has an MA in Peace and Development Studies. She studied in the US, were she was awarded a BA from Mary Washington College in International Affaires. She studied in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and in Israel, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Prior of being an Intern for Southern Hemisphere she worked as a Program Officer in Washington D.C. for International Research and Exchange Board, where she was administrating a USAID funded project that developed independent media in Bosnia and in Serbia. Cheryl is now back in the United States. This is what Cheryl had to say about her experience as an intern for Southern Hemisphere: “Southern Hemisphere supported me with guidance and resources, and with the knowledge I had gained from my initial project, I felt equipped to design workshops for youth that fit into the South African context.” Andrew MkhontswanaAndrew Mkhontswana,has an Honors degree in Development Studies and a BA in Public Administration. Both degrees have been awarded from the University of Western Cape. After his experience with Southern Hemisphere he has decided to continue helping Cape Town’s communities by working to guarantee its safety and security, thus, he is now working for the Cape Town Police Department. This is what Andrew had to say about his Southern Hemisphere experience: “I want to thank Southern Hemisphere for accommodating me in a nice conducive environment. It’s been a real pleasure for me to receive such good training and exposure to the world of work.Now I know what to expect from outside and inside in the working environment- because of you!” Marcelo RodriguezThis is what Marcelo had to say about his experience with Southern Hemisphere: “Southern Hemisphere, more than just a practical internship, has become like a family for me.

| Hannah Muthoni Macharia
Hannah is from Kenya and completed her internship with Southern Hemisphere in March 2006. Hannah has an MA in Peace, conflict and Development Studies from the UNESCO Chair of Peace and Philosophy at Universitat Jaume I, Spain. Her thesis was on "1980-2000: Education and Underdevelopment in Kenya". This is what Hannah had to say about working with Southern Hemisphere: “Working with Southern Hemisphere was a great adventure that created opportunities for me to develop new skills in research and project management, while I diversified my career prospects. I was fully involved in projects, office duties and also worked as a projects coordinator and Fieldworker, which progressively transformed theory into practice. It was also an exciting experience for me to learn and interact with people of different culture in South Africa in their daily life while at work”. Christy Etuna Tawii Christy is from Namibia but pursued her studies at the Cape Town University of Technology where she completed her BTech in Environmental Management in 2008. She joined Southern Hemisphere's Internship Program in 2008 for one year, and was then employed as a Junior Projects Officer. This is what Christy had to say about her internship experience at Southern Hemisphere: "As an intern at Southern Hemisphere you are given the opportunity to actively participate in work at all levels. I developed new skills in research in a wide range of areas. The job involved a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, diligence, the ability to organise, assertiveness and communicating effectively. My experiences during this internship are invaluable. I learned the importance of making people your priority in any organisation or project (participatory approach). This was a great internship that I wish more university students could experience." |
