SHC welcomes first international intern!
Between November 2001 and January 2002 we had our first international intern, Cheryl Schoenberg, who had just completed her Masters in Peace and Development in Spain. During her time here she provided invaluable assistance on one of our projects which entailed analyzing the results of a participatory evaluation of a project run by an NGO in KwaZulu Natal. After this, she turned her attention to her own peace education project, which entailed developing material for a series of peace education workshops and finally conducting a pilot of this workshop amongst Cape Flats youth. Introducing our Summer Learnership Programme
Thousands of South African matriculants enter tertiary education, and graduate tertiary education, without any work experience. We have decided to add a learners school holiday work time to our internship programme. To this end, learners from grade 9 up will have the opportunity to gain work experience in their school holidays. Nicholas Mquakakayi (16) wants to be a lawyer. He is an ambitious youngster with big dreams and few resources. He had never used a computer. He joined us in the December 2001 school holiday, and is now not only familiar with the workings of an office, but is also able to work his way around a computer. We wish him the best of luck in grade 10.
Free Training Courses
If you wanted to attend two free training courses, the Cape Town office of Southern hemisphere would have been the place to be! In December 2001 and January 2002, we conducted free courses in , Negotiations Skills and Human Rights Indicators respectively. These workshops were fantastic in terms of introducing the topic of the workshops to participants, stimulating hgeated debate amongst participants and raising awareness about global issues and how these in turn can be sued by community level organisations in their advocacy and lobbying work.
