The Southern Hemisphere Team

Southern Hemisphere is a combination of partner consultants, the founding members of the organisation. The partners are assisted by internationally-based associates. In addition, further capacity is built through a global network of highly specialised consultants.

Partners

Dena Lomofsky MA - Dena Lomofsky is a practising consultant and has a Masters in Development Studies (University of the Western Cape, 1998). She is active in the areas of economic development, youth development and organisational development. Dena has designed and facilitated training workshops, including materials production for all age groups in both South Africa and Israel. As a project manager she has managed and participated in large research projects and participation processes. She is fluent in English, and conversant in Afrikaans, German and Hebrew. She is a founding member of Southern Hemisphere.


Daniel Nina Ph.D. - Daniel Nina is a Caribbean attorney and holds a Ph.D. in law and Social Theory (University of Kent, England, 1991). He has worked in the areas of law, public policy, conflict resolution and organisational development. He has also written extensively in these areas, both articles and books. As a consultant he has conducted work in his areas of specialisation in different countries, including South Africa, Argentina, Northern Ireland, Spain and the Caribbean. He is fluent in English and Spanish, and is conversant in French and Portuguese. He is a founding member of Southern Hemisphere.


Associate

Andries Mangokwana MSocSci - Andries Mangokwana holds an MA in Social Science specializing in Social Planning and Administration. As a social development expert, Andries has a broad range of experience working in the corporate, local govern¬ment and NGO sectors. He has an MSocSc degree specialising in Social Planning and Administration. Andries has specialist skills as a trainer, facilitator, evaluator and project manager. He has significant experience in grant management and local government. He has recently managed the evaluation of the CMRA Benchmarking Project for HIV and AIDs in Local Government in South Africa. He is fluent in English, Northern Sotho and Tshivenda and is based in the Gauteng Province.


Reckson Luvhengo MSW - Reckson Luvhengo is a development practitioner with a Masters Degree is Social Work (MSW) from Howard University (1993). He is active in the areas of monitoring and evaluation, capacity building, facilitation, public participation and project management. Reckson has worked as a social worker in the Department of Health and Welfare. He has also worked as a Community Services Workstation Project Assistant for the Washington, D.C Health and Social Services Coalition and as a Programme Development Intern for the Washington Urban League. Reckson lectured at the University of Venda in the Department of Social Work for a period of five years. He is skilled in monitoring and evaluation, capacity building, facilitation, public participation and project management. Reckson is based in Limpopo and is fluent in Tshivenda, Northern Sotho and English.


Nana Davies  - ASSOCIATED SENIOR CONSULTANT - completed her Masters in Law at University of Copenhagen, Denmark and part of it at the University of Rennes, France, where she majored in Human Rights Law. She worked in international development aid throughout Africa, before becoming a consultant in the development field in South Africa in 1996. She co-founded Nielsen and Klein Consulting in Cape Town in 1998. She has provided consultancy services to Government, Universities, Donors and particularly the NGO sector on Project Planning, Evaluation, Facilitation, Organisational Development and Applied Research in the field of Social Economic Justice. She is fluent in Danish and English and conversant in French


Liezl Coetzee Ms - Liezl Coetzee Liezl holds both a BA and a BSc (Mathematical Sciences) from RAU and is currently completing an MPhil (Anthropology: Organisations and Public Cultures) at the University of Stellenbosch. She has many years’ experience as a Social Researcher and development practitioner. Liezl has extensive experience in social research methods, including community and stakeholder participation processes as well as qualitative and quantitative data analysis, having worked in a wide range of social research projects, including social impact assessments, rural development programmes, resettlement plans, and other initiatives. Liezl is fluent in English and Afrikaans, and skilled at communicating with groups and individuals across a wide social spectrum to obtain inputs on developments, having worked with a diverse range of stakeholder groups across South Africa, as well as Mozambique, Egypt, Swaziland, Zambia, Lesotho, and Namibia.


Tamarie Magaisa Ms - Ms Tamarie Magaisa-Musangeya is an Organizational Development Consultant at Southern Hemisphere. She has a BSc (Honours) in Politics and Administration and Post Graduate Diploma in Health Services Management. Tamarie has a broad range of skills some of which include training and materials development, monitoring and evaluation, facilitation, business skills training, performance management, organisational capacity assessment, policy development and implementation and finance and administrative management (including grant management). She has worked both in Zimbabwe and South Africa, and is now based in Pretoria.





Cathy Chames  - Cathy Chames- is a Senior Consultant and a registered social worker. She has worked within a broad range of settings for the past 13 years both locally and abroad. Cathy holds a Masters in Social Development, which was awarded with distinction from the University of Cape Town. Some highlights in her career include developing a psycho-social support programme for refugee children, working in the childcare system in the UK, managing a children's home for street children and initiating a peer mediation programme at a school in Cape Town. Cathy brings with her extensive experience in education (particularly in relation to teaching, supervision, training and materials development) and child rights. Since joining Southern Hemisphere Consultants, Cathy has embarked on a number of extensive research and evaluation projects including research on the realisation of rights to education for the South African Human Rights Commission, and a baseline study on National Child Protection Systems in South Africa, Zambia and Swaziland for Save the Children (Sweden).


Employees

Wilma Wessels BSocSc - Wilma Wessels is a Consultant and holds a BA (Hons) in Organisational Psychology from the University of South Africa. Wilma has a dual role at Southern Hemisphere being both a Consultant as well as a Human Resource Officer. Wilma has experience in conducting both qualitative and quantitative research, evaluations, developing monitoring and evaluation systems, planning, mentoring, training, facilitation and developing human resource systems. She is passionate about Capacity Development and Organisational Development, particularly on a grassroots level, and therefore champions the Organisational Development Portfolio. Wilma has experience in the area of youth development, HIV and AIDS, education and training, child and human rights, gender and education, among others.


Nadia Gain  - is the Office Manager at Southern Hemisphere and so is responsible for financial management, general administration, office maintenance, human resource administration and internal co-ordination of staff. She has been with Southern Hemisphere for over 5 years and previously worked for six years in the Retail Industry. She is now furthering her studies in Office Administration through Boston College in Cape Town.


John Paul Ayala Ba. Psic.SocSc. - Mr John Paul Ayala received a BA in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from the University of Puerto Rico and is now completing his MA in Social Community Psychology. He is certified as a Mediator by the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico and co-ordinates a major project on Community Conflict Management Model for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (national). Other initiatives he has been involved in are facilitating seminars on cultural diversity and social coexistence, and developing a documentary on the contribution of Dominican immigrants in the Puertorrican society. He is fluent in Spanish and English.


Yarelis Andujar B.Admin. - Yarelis Andujar has a BA in Office Systems from the University of Puerto Rico and is now working towards completing her Master’s degree in Human Resources this year from the Metropolitan University. Her dissertation topic is on how the cultural diversity affects the organizational culture. Yarelis also volunteers during the weekends for a religious and community based organization. She is the Office Administrator for Southern Hemisphere Consultant Office in Puerto Rico.


Zayra M Badillo Castro MA - Zayra Badillo Castro holds a BA in History from the University of Puerto Rico and recently completed an MA in International Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. Zayra started at Southern Hemisphere as a Project Coordinator in our offices in San Juan, and is now an Associate and Senior Consultant in the Puerto Rican office. She has worked in Russia, supporting NGO’s in the topic of the digital divide and children with disabilities and is currently involved in the Non Profit Sector in Puerto Rico, promoting the use of information and communication technology to improve children’s academic success and women’s development. Zayra is fluent in English and Spanish and conversant in Russian and French.


Thokozani Norushe  - Thokozani Norushe is a Projects Officer and holds an Honours Degree in Social Anthropology (2006) from the University of Stellenbosch. She is currently working on her Masters Degree at the University of Cape Town (Sociology). Prior to joining Southern Hemisphere, was a Junior Researcher at the HSRC where she co-authored an article on Early Childhood Development, which looked at the impact of and prioritisation of ECD for children from impoverished backgrounds. Her main research interests are in the field of policy development and the impact of HIV/AIDS on orphaned children. Thokozani also worked with the Department of Environmental Affairs where she acted as project manager of an organisation that trained 45 teachers in Climate Change concepts and new teaching methods.


Christy Tawii  - Christy Tawii

Christy has a BTech in Environmental Management and is currently pursuing her MTech in the same field. She joined Southern Hemisphere as an intern in 2008 and was promoted to Junior Projects Officer in 2009. Her interests include project management and environmental and socio-economic development. Christy has particularly been exposed to research and various evaluations for Southern Hemisphere. Her experience includes doing an environmental-social impact assessment for ESKOM, reviewing the Biodiversity performance and monitoring system for CapeNature and the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning (Western Cape), conducting feasibility study for the Expanded Public Works Program.


Nancy Malgas  - Nancy is an Intern at Southern Hemisphere. She holds an Honours degree in Psychology from the University of Cape Town and is currently completing her Masters in Research Psychology. Nancy has experience in quantitative research and has strong analytic and quantitative research skills. As part of her MA degree, Nancy is conducting a quantitative study on brain-injured school-aged children (aged 7-10 years) with the aim of generating an updated profile of cognitive deficits in a South African pediatric population. To her credit, Nancy has also been involved in a Neuropsychology Clinic Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital where she was part of a team offering neuropsychological assessments for children with various congenital and acquired neuropathologies. Prior to joining Southern Hemisphere Consultants, Nancy was a Rehabilitation worker/ Administration Coordinator, and a Psychology Tutor at the University of Cape Town.
